On Sept. 24, 2011, the British Columbia government will hold a binding referendum on whether to keep or eliminate the HST. This referendum allows us the opportunity to once again ask the government to help mitigate the impact of the new 7 per cent tax from the HST on restaurant meals.
Following a year of growing public opposition to the HST – including a restaurant industry “No Meal Tax” petition that more than 200,000 British Columbians signed and an anti-HST petition garnering more than 700,000 signatures – the B.C. government has acknowledged it made several mistakes in the announcement and implementation of the HST.
CRFA will continue fighting for mitigation measures to help members better cope with the tax until next year’s referendum, and beyond if the HST passes the vote.
