Due to CRFA action, the City of Winnipeg has removed a proposed annual grease-trap licensing fee of $100 for foodservice establishments.
When CRFA first learned the city wanted to introduce this new fee as part of its draft sewer bylaw, the company met with water and waste officials to voice the industry’s opposition. The CRFA pointed out that the city’s restaurant operators have been hit with a number of licensing fee increases in recent years, making it difficult for them to absorb yet another cost.
Grease traps are mandatory in most commercial, institutional and foodservice preparation operations in the city, but Winnipeg would have been the first Canadian city to introduce such a licensing fee.
Following the decision to abandon the fee, the city has notified operators that it will inspect grease traps over the next year to ensure they are aware of their responsibilities and that traps are properly working.
