CRFA Update
CRFA has written to the PEI government, opposing its plan to increase the minimum wage from $9 to $10 by April 2012. In February, PEI announced it would raise the minimum wage in three phases as follows:
- $9.30/hour effective June 1, 2011;
- $9.60/hour effective Oct. 1, 2011;
- $10/hour effective April 1, 2012.
Given minimum wage has increased much faster than other economic indicators coupled with a weak economy due to the recession, CRFA is concerned operators will be hard-pressed to handle new wage cost increases. During the consultation process, we argued to freeze the minimum wage and introduce tip and training differentials.
