Toronto keeps its coffee cup for now

Toronto City Council has voted to defer any plans to tax and ban plastic take-out containers and hot drink cups. Potential legislation will not pass until the province finishes reviewing the Waste Diversion Act and blue box program.
This decision follows a one-year campaign by CRFA to ensure the City doesn’t tax or ban take-out packaging or require consumers to carry reusable containers.
Instead, CRFA has consistently argued that recycling is a more reasonable and responsible way to handle packaging. Other communities currently recycle paper coffee cups with plastic lids, as well as rigid plastic packaging.
