CRFA Update

Following CRFA action, Environment Minister Pierre Arcand has rejected the idea of a deposit system for alcohol and wine bottles – and confirmed deposit amounts for applicable bottles (beer and non-refillable bottles/cans) will not increase – until 2013. For now, the Ministry of Environment will study the deposit system versus the blue box to decide whether a single recycling initiative can be used.

Nearly half of Quebec restaurants recycle

The program “La Table pour la récupération hors foyer” – set up three years ago with the help of CRFA to offer recycling services to the industrial, commercial and institutional sectors – released positive results in March:
  • 2,700 restaurants, bars and hotels have benefited from the program
  • 9,000 tons of recyclables were diverted from landfills
  • 76 per cent of restaurants, bars and hotels recycle their material (50 per cent after taking the program, 26 per cent were already recycling)
  • Nine per cent were directed to the private sector
  • Only 15 per cent refused to participate at this time
Results are based on restaurants, hotels and bars studied in the greater Montreal, Lanaudière and Quebec City regions. Overall, 41 per cent of Quebec’s 18,000 restaurants, bars and hotels recycle.

The Ministry of Environment and Stewardship Quebec have announced a subsidy of up to $12 million for the program to continue for at least five years.
