Top 10 Mexican entrées on Canadian menus

Burritos are the Mexican item most frequently featured in Canadian menus, according to MenuMonitor data. A total of 83 burrito items appeared on the menus of Top 250 chain and leading independent operators in the second half of 2010 - almost twice as many mentions as the second- and third-place Mexican dishes.

Burritos are appealing because they are filling entrées, come in many flavour varieties and can be customized with different proteins, cheeses, vegetables and sauces. For instance, Steamrollers Burritos & Bowls offers a Super Deluxe Vegetarian Burrito featuring a spinach tortilla with basmati or brown rice, black beans, soya cheese, carrots, cucumbers, cabbage, salsa, guacamole and garlic-yogurt sauce. Freshii serves a Bangkok Burrito with cucumbers, mushrooms, bean sprouts and warm peanut sauce.

Quesadillas accounted for the second highest number of Mexican entrées on Canadian menus. Operators featured traditional quesadillas, such as Taco Del Mar’s grilled quesadillas with cheese and pico de gallo, as well as innovative quesadillas, such as Beer Bistro’s Lobster Quesadilla with leeks, sweet peppers, corn, smoked Cheddar, basil, cilantro, avocado salsa and gueuze-soured cream. Similar to burritos, quesadillas can usually be customized by guests.

The “Other Mexican” category was represented by 26 entrées, with ingredients including chicken, brisket, shrimp, beans and cheese. Other Mexican offerings range from huevos rancheros to Mexican pizza to chalupas to flautas. Mexicali Rosa’s offers Bean Gorditas featuring flour tortillas and Jack cheese wrapped around two corn tortillas, filled with Santa Fe beans and topped with shredded lettuce, tomatoes and Monterey Jack cheese. Lone Star Texas Grill offers Baja Tequila Shrimp, skillet-seared shrimp tossed with peppers, onions, tomatoes, garlic and ranchero sauce, flambéed with tequila and served over Mexican rice and seasonal vegetables.

Tostadas fall lower on the list of Mexican entrées on Canadian menus. Tostadas are typically topped with ingredients such as meat or seafood, beans, cheeses and vegetables. Topanga Café in Vancouver offers crab and prawn tostadas, served with chips and salsa, rice and beans.
